Population: City 19,460, Adams County 35,356 (1990 Census).

Parks--Natchez has 12 parks or esplanades, Riverside at the end of Main St., overlooking the Mississippi River, relics of the drill grounds used by the Spanish. Memorial Park, located in the heart of the city, covers one-half of a city square. Duncan Par k, a 220-acre gift from the heirs of Dr. Stephen Duncan, includes Auburn and Surmyside plantations. The antebellum home "Auburn" stilt stands. Most of the park is heavily wooded, and contains an 18-hole golf course, merry-go-round and playgrounds for chil d ren, tennis, baseball and other sports facilities. Liberty Park on Liberty Road includes facilities for baseball, horseback riding and display area for club events and other shows and Osceola, a small park in Homochitto addition. Under-the-Hill Park, a sm a ll park overlooking the river. Natchez National Historical Park, established in 1989 includes Melrose, an 80-acre estate with a beautiful Greek revival main house, original outbuildings and original furnishings. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 19 7 4, it is the first property acquisition of Natchez National Historical Park. Plans call for development of William Johnson House, home of a prominent free black in antebellum Natchez, and the Fort Rosalie site. Natchez State Park, located nine miles north of town on U.S. 61, this 3000-acre park offers hiking and biking trails, two cabins for rent, spacious campgrounds, and a large lake where record bass have been taken. Open year round, Grand Village of the Natchez Indians-this archaeological park and muse u m, open free to the public, gives visitors a look at customs of some of the Natchez area 5 earliest inhabitants. Mount Locust-this 1820 inn on the Natchez Trace Parkway 15 miles from Natchez is open daily and admission is free of charge, by the National P a rk Service. Natchez City Cemetery & U.S. National Cemetery-these historic parks are where the famous have been buried for centuries. Natchez "trace Parkway-this ancient artery links Southwest Mississippi to Nashville, Tenn which is 450 miles. to the north east. Natchez is 62 miles west of Interstate 55, connected by U.S. 84. Illinois Central Gulf Railroad serves Natchez, as does the Greyhound-Trailways Bus System. Charter air service is available at the Natchez-Adams County Airport . The Natchez Port has river-rail-truck terminals with open and closed storage for public use. Recreation and Entertainment--4 motion picture screens, 3 golf courses, tennis courts, horse back riding area, 12 parks and a bowling alley. With at least 10 months of fine weather each year, Natchez offers numerous recreational activities outdoors. Hunting and fishing are excellent, as are golfmg, bicycling, jogging, swimming an playing tennis, baseball, football and other sports. Much of this activity takes place in Natchez's parks, including the city-owned Duncan Park with 220 acres. Small city parks are Bluff Park along the river, Memorial Park on Main Street and Natchez Under-the-Hill Park. Other m~or parks are the Natchez State Park and the Natchez Trace Parkway. Indoor activities include such sports as basketball and bowling and entertainments ranging from concerts by the Natchez Community Band to perform a nces by the Natchez Little Theatre and the Natchez Community Concert Association. Music, art, dancing, storytelling, movies, lectures on various topics, tours of historic houses, the Old South Winery, the Grand Village of the Natchez Indian museum, Jeffer son College Historic Site museum, and other entertaimnents also attract people.

Education--The Natchez Special Municipal Separate School District operates four elementary, one middle school and one high school for the county. Seven private or parochial schools also provide elementary and secondary education. They are: Adams County Christian School, Cathedral (Roman Catholic) School, First United Pentecostal ( Church, Holy Family School, Natchez Christian Academy, Pleasant Acre Day School and Trinity Episcopal Day School. Higher education is offered by Alcorn State University School of Nursing in Natchez; Alcorn State University in Lorman (40 miles away); Copiah-Lincoln Junior College, Natchez Campus, including a vocational-technical program; and Natchez Junior College.
